Your historically bad, 2010 Chicago Cubs
After taking the field in 14,490 innings without making two errors in any one of those innings, Derrek Lee broke new ground tonight. In the fourth inning of a grotesque 9-5 loss to the Athletics at Wrigley Field, Lee first muffed a ground ball hit by A’s pitcher Trevor Cahill and then, on the very next hitter, failed to close his glove on a toss from shortstop Starlin Castro.
The errors were just Lee’s second and third of the season and the first since Opening Day in Atlanta. The fact is, Lee could make a number of defensive gaffes and his play in the field still wouldn’t be the weakest part of his game this year: his 0-for-4 tonight lowered his season batting average to an anemic .225. Among the 14 NL first-basemen with enough plate appearances to qualify for the batting title, Lee’s 702 OPS ranks 13th, ahead of only Todd Helton’s preposterous 694.
