Get this man an invisible dog fence

May 26, 2010 - Chicago, ILLINOIS, UNITED STATES - epa02174647 Chicago Cubs second baseman Mike Fontenot reacts after being hit by a pitch thrown by Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Chad Billingsley in the third inning of their Major League Baseball game at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois, USA, 26 May 2010.

Extreme measures must be taken to keep Mike Fontenot from assuming a defensive position on the left side of the Chicago Cubs infield. My first thought was a shock collar and one of those invisible fences. All I know is that something must be done.

Case in point:

Filling in Wednesday night for regular third baseman Aramis Ramirez, who is still nursing a bone bruise on his left hand, Fontenot failed to cleanly glove a hard ground ball by Manny Ramirez in the first inning of the Dodgers/Cubs game and was forced to concede a run. The next inning, Fontenot fielded a dribbler hit by Russell Martin and launched a throw over the head of Cub first baseman Derrek Lee, leading to two unearned Dodger runs. At that point Los Angeles led 5-0.

Fontenot is a middling defender at second base and much less than that at short and third, as he demonstrated Wednesday night.

As for the game, the Cubs clawed back from their early deficit and eventually drew to within 7-5 before a late home run by Casey Blake established the final Dodger margin, 8-5.
