The Cubs as Healers

Unless the word “BREWERS” is scripted across your chest, a series against the Cubs this year appears to promise great things, both in the present and in the games beyond.

The lowly Astros slunk into Chicago the Friday before last, a day after winning their first game of the season. The 1-8 Astros then proceeded to take two of three from the Cubs and subsequently won five of their next six.

The Mets were 4-8 when the Cubs rolled into Citi Field for a four-game set beginning a week ago Monday. The Metropolitans took three of the four games, went on to complete a 9-1 homestand and at this writing, sit atop the National League East with a record of 13-9.

The Nationals have enjoyed what for them is a glorious start. They began play Monday at Wrigley with a record of 10-9 before dropping that evening’s game to the home team on a walk-off walk.

But in light of victories on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Nats currently stand at 12-10, the first time they have been two games over .500 since September 30, 2005, their first year in the nation’s capital.

Who knows what heights they may now reach thanks to that Chicago Cubs bounce?

Next up for the Cubs are the 10-11 Arizona Diamondbacks, who will begin a four-game series at Wrigley Field commencing Thursday. Sports Illustrated’s Jon Heyman offered this report on the state of the Diamondbacks earlier tonight on Twitter:

benson, rosale DL candidates for beat-up #d-backs. laroche, reynolds playing thru pain.

“beat-up”? “playing thru pain”? Never fear, Arizona. You’ve come to the home of the Chicago Cubs, the Lourdes of Major League Baseball, 2010.

Let the healing begin.
